U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Drop Below 400,000

First time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits showed a notable decrease in the week ended September 24th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday, with claims dropping below the key 400,000 level. The report showed that initial jobless claims fell by 37,000 to 391,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 428,000. U.S. Economy Grew Faster Than Previously Estimated In Q2

The U.S. economy grew more than initially reported in the second quarter, according to figures released Thursday by the Commerce Department. The 1.3 percent growth in U.S. gross domestic product, while still weak, was 0.3 percentage points stronger than the 1 percent growth previously reported. U.S. Pending Home Sales Dip 1.2% Amid Hurricane Disruptions

Pending home sales in the U.S. fell by less than expected in the month of August, the National Association of Realtors revealed in a report on Thursday, with disruptions due to Hurricane Irene contributing to the decrease. NAR said its pending home sales index fell by 1.2 percent in August following a 1.3 percent decrease in July. While both houses of Congress are in recess, the House of Representatives used a procedural maneuver Thursday to pass a temporary spending bill to prevent a government shutdown at the end of the week. The House approved the legislation by unanimous consent, with just three Congressmen present for the pro forma session. The spending bill only funds government operations until October 4th but gives the House a chance to pass a separate Senate-approved bill that extends funding until November 18th.
